3-DAY challenger tour • 60-95km per day
alt empordà > cadaques > Baix Empordà
from £999 per person
Your local host from Bacchus on Bikes will pick you up from Barcelona or Girona in the late afternoon and transfer you to your overnight location, Can Xiquet (2hr transfer). Nestled in the hills of the beautiful Albera Massif, it boasts panoramic views across the Alt Empordà and Cap de Creus - the most easterly point of the Iberian Peninsula.
Before dinner, stroll down the hill to Masia Serra for wine tasting with Jaume Serra. Jaume is rated as one of the top wine makers in the region and trained at the distinguished Châteaux Petrus in Bordeaux in his early years of winemaking. With 13 hectares of vines set against the backdrop of the Albera, enjoy the chance to taste a selection of his wines from grape varieties that include Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Merlot and Marsselan.
Return to Can Xiquet for a delicious 3-course Catalan meal accompanied by local Empordán wines.

After a healthy breakfast at Can Xiquet, cruise through the Alt Empordàn plains towards the spectacular Cap de Creus National Park. Pause for a mid-morning café cortado in Garriguella before tackling the short climb to Sant Pere de Rodes Monastery. Savour the magnificent view over a lunchtime picnic, prepared by Bacchus. Descend down to the coastline and into La Selva after lunch to visit the family-run Mas Estela, a charming vineyard hidden in the many contours of the Cap de Creus.
Nuria and Dider will welcome you for wine tasting and a short tour. With only 12km left from Mas Estela to Cadaques, arrive in time for a relaxed afternoon by the sea. Your accommodation for the night, Llane Petit, sits on the seafront and is walking distance from renowned restaurant, Compartir. Opened by 3 ex-El Bulli Foundation chefs in 2012, it is a Bacchus favourite! (Dinner not included at Compartir - please let us know if you would like Bacchus to make a reservation or recommend other restaurants).
cadaques to bell lloc
92km • 885m elevation
The remarkably unspoilt and picturesque seaside town of Cadaques was where Salvador Dali drew inspiration for some of his most famous paintings. Sunrises here are worth waking up for! Rise early for breakfast before leaving Cadaques and descending towards Roses. Wend along beautiful Empordàn backroads and pass through vineyards, orchards and medieval villages until you arrive for lunch at Antic Casino, an old meeting place turned locals’ favourite restaurant in Pals.
Finca Bell Lloc is a short afternoon cycle away. Sat quaintly on the hillside of the Gavarres National Park overlooking the glistening Mediterranean, its secluded location and innovative architecture makes the gradient to get there well worth it. The converted manor house has 6 beautifully designed rooms, its own vineyard and a staggeringly cool underground cellar. Constructed from a rusted ship hull, this labyrinth maze is more reminiscent to a James Bond villain lair.
Relax by the pool or settle in with a G&T on the terrace. Take a fascinating tour of the cellar before sitting down to a delicious meal accompanied by Bell Lloc’s Brugarol wine. Heavily influenced by land and sea, Catalan cuisine has become recognised and highly respected on the international stage. Allow Ángel, Bell Lloc chef, to prepare you one of his mouth-watering signature dishes on your final night in the Empordà.
Enjoy breakfast on the terrace overlooking the Gavarres followed by a short transfer (or 15km cycle if preferred) to the seaside town of Sant Feliu de Guixols. This marks the start of a coastal route which was used in a stage of the 2009 Tour de France - a spectacular ride through the Ardenya National Park with expansive views over the Mediterranean.
Climb to the hermitage of Sant Grau for a cold can of the local favourite, Damm Limón – a refreshing elixir, part beer and part lemon soda – before a daring descent inland towards Mas Ponsjoan for wine tasting and lunch. Mas Ponsjoan have been producing organic wine since 1668 and Manel & Joana Comas are the fifth generation of wine producers. Their wine is produced on a very small scale and they sell homegrown produce each evening directly to the local community. Tomatoes – you’d do well to find any fresher!
Post-lunch, ride or transfer to Finca Bell Lloc to shower and collect your bags before Bacchus will transfer you to the airport for your return flight home.
