explorer tour • 40-70km per day
baix empordà > bell lloc > sant grau
3 nights from £1,250 per person
Your local host from Bacchus on Bikes will pick you up from Barcelona or Girona in the morning and transfer you to your overnight location, Castell d’Empordà (1hr 40mins) – with its extensive gardens and unique location, this renovated castle is one of the most elegant and exclusive places to stay in Baix Empordà. Enjoy a delicious lunch on the terrace before a member of the Bacchus team manages your bike fitting.
After lunch, wend along the beautiful back roads and dedicated cycle routes that link the medieval towns, vineyards and olive oil groves of the Empordà. In Púbol you will pass the Gala-Dalí Castle - a place Salvador Dalí, the mischievous provocateur and prominent Spanish surrealist artist, could only visit with written permission from his wife and muse, Gala. Pause for a coffee in the town square of Monells before returning to Castell d’Empordà for wine tasting and a 3-course dinner.
Following a leisurely breakfast at Castell d’Empordà, cycle a wonderful route through the Gavarres National Park to Mas Ponsjoan for wine tasting and lunch. Mas Ponsjoan have been producing organic wine since 1668 and Manel & Joana Comas are the fifth generation of wine producers. Their wine is produced on a very small scale and they sell homegrown produce each evening directly to the local community. Nowhere else will you taste such fresh tomatoes!
Finca Bell Lloc is a short afternoon cycle away. Sat quaintly on the hillside of the Gavarres National Park overlooking the glistening Mediterranean, its secluded location and innovative architecture makes the gradient to get there well worth it. The converted manor house has 6 beautifully designed rooms, its own vineyard and a staggeringly cool underground cellar. It is a charming place and Pepi will be there to welcome you as if it were your own home.
Take time to relax by the pool or explore your surroundings before sitting down to a delicious meal accompanied by Bell Lloc’s Brugarol wine. Heavily influenced by land and sea, Catalan cuisine has become recognised and highly respected on the international stage. Allow Ángel, Bell Lloc chef and husband of Pepi, to prepare you one of his mouth-watering signature dishes.
tour de france
Enjoy breakfast on the terrace overlooking the Gavarres followed by a short transfer (or 15km cycle if preferred) to the seaside town of Sant Feliu de Guixols. This marks the start of a coastal route which was used in a stage of the 2009 Tour de France - a spectacular ride through the Ardenya National Park with expansive views over the Mediterranean.
Arrive to the hermitage of Sant Grau for a Bacchus picnic lunch in the courtyard – a freshly prepared selection of Empordà produce including Mas Ponsjoan fruit & veg, jamón ibérico carved off the leg, local cheese and pâté all washed down with a cold can of the local favourite, Damm Limón – a refreshing elixir, part beer and part lemon soda.
After lunch, descend towards Llagostera, climb up and over past Romanya and then drop back down towards Finca Bell Lloc. Take a refreshing swim in the pool before an evening tour of the Brugarol cellar – constructed from a rusted ship hull, this labyrinth maze is more reminiscent to a James Bond villain lair. Taste a selection of Brugarol’s red, white and sparkling wines, which will hopefully whet your appetite for a delicious dinner on the terrace prepared by Ángel.
Savour your last Catalan breakfast at Bell Lloc before Bacchus will transfer you to the airport for your return flight home.
